Packing Pretty
I’d always prided myself on my (super amazing) packing skills. I never checked a bag, only brought what I needed, color-coordinated handbags with shoes, and was always able to pack and unpack at record speeds. Then, I had a Baby.
Enter Baby Stella. I’m now lugging formula, bottles and diapers along with bibs, toys and endless amounts of baby clothes (she may spill or something else, right?) I’ve shipped many of these items ahead of time when possible, but that hasn’t always been the case. And, even so, I’m lugging strollers, car seats and other massively heavy objects around the airport. Overnight I’d become the person I dreaded being behind in the security line.
Not to mention, I somehow translated my poor packing skills for her over to me as well. I found myself packing a large suitcase for a three day trip, checking bags and  spending ungodly amount of time packing.
As Stella approaches her first birthday, I’m working to regain my packing prowess, for myself anyway. I put together a list (I love a good list) of the tips that once had me packing in minutes, zooming through security and never checking a bag. Here are my top tips for packing success:
Before packing, make a detailed list of what you’re going to take. Break it down by day and outfit, including shoes and accessories.
Pack basics and solids. Basics, like a versatile pair of denim or white tee, and solids can be easily re-worn with another outfit. If you must pack prints, pack only a couple that you can mix and match with the solids.
Girls, pack dresses rather than separates. It’s one item that you can throw on easily.
Only take one workout outfit and try to leave the sneakers at home if possible (plan workouts like yoga and Pilates that don’t require shoes). We all have lofty hopes of working out on the road but let’s face it; it never happens as much as we’d like.
Try coordinating your handbag choice with your shoes. I typically bring one large tote that doubles as purse/extra carry-on and a clutch for evenings.
Have a travel outfit that you can wear there and back. My travel outfit is typically boyfriend jeans or leggings, paired with a solid tank, cardigan or sweater (I’m always cold on the plane) and ballet flats. Layering is key for travel days.
Stock a toiletry bag that’s always packed and ready to go, including your favorite travel size products. My toiletry bag stays in my suitcase so it’s one less thing I have to think about when packing.
Now, let’s just see if I take my own advice.
